Grade: 3 Unit: 1 Week: 2 Content: Math Dates: 8/27-8/31

Theme Essential Question: Why do we need to be able to fluently add and subtract and tell time accurately?

Essential Questions:
How do we solve addition and subtraction problems fluently using estimation to judge the reasonableness of an answer?

Standards
  • 3.NBT.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
  • 3.NBT.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Objectives
  • The learner will review place value.
  • The learner will round two and three digit whole numbers to the nearest 10 or/and 100.
  • The learner will fluently add and subtract within 100 using a variety of strategies and will judge the reasonableness of the answer using estimation.

Assessment
Product
  • Students will use the weekly sale adds to purchase items up to $10.
1.) They should first estimate their purchases and then find the exact amount of their purchases.
2.) Students should then estimate the difference in cost between two of the items, then find the exact difference between the two items.

Key Questions (match Standard)
  • Can the learner use place value to round to the nearest 10 or 100?
  • Can the learner use estimation strategies to judge reasonable sums and differences?
  • Can the learner fluently solve addition and subtraction problems within 1000?

Observable Student Behaviors (Performance)
  • The learner will use place value to round to the nearest 10 or 100 given a two or three digit number.
  • The learner will use estimation strategies to judge reasonable sums or differences.
  • The learner will fluently add and subtract within 1000.

Mathematical Practices
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Gizmo:
  • Number Line Frog Hop (Addition and Subtraction)
Live a frog's life as you hop along a number line in search of flies. Learn how addition and subtraction can be represented as movement along a number line. Fred the frog may even help you get better at adding and subtracting two-digit numbers in your head by decomposing them into tens and ones. Teacher Guide & Student Exploration Sheet Available.
  • Target Sum Card Game (Multi-digit Addition)
Play an addition card game! The goal is to create a sum that is as close as possible to the target sum. Students will deepen their understanding of place value as they get better at playing the game. Many game options allow students to vary the game for more practice. The game can be played with one or two players. Teacher Guide & Student Exploration Sheet Available.
